August: Tennoji exhibitions and a limited-time Namba event

OSAKA-INFO's August listings include the Osaka Museum of Natural History's Big Extinction exhibition through October 12, the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts' Water Margin exhibition through September 6, and the Osaka Museum of History's NHK Taiga drama exhibition through August 31. A limited-time event is also listed in Namba from July 25 to August 23. On hot days, place an indoor exhibition at midday and save Shinsekai or Namba walks for later.

July 14-17: Kyoto Gion Matsuri Saki Matsuri

Kyoto's official travel guide lists Gion Matsuri throughout July. Saki Matsuri Yoiyama runs July 14-16, and the Saki Matsuri float procession starts around 9 AM on July 17. From Osaka, JR, Hankyu and Keihan are all usable, but evening Yoiyama and the procession morning will be crowded. Avoid large luggage, decide your return station in advance and keep dinner and return timing flexible.

July 24-25: Osaka Tenjin Matsuri

Tenjin Matsuri holds its eve festival on July 24 and main festival on July 25 around Osaka Tenmangu and the Okawa River. Use Minamimorimachi or Osaka Tenmangu for the shrine and land procession, and consider Temmabashi or Sakuranomiya for the river events. Crowds peak on July 25 evening, so confirm traffic controls, choose your return station before arrival and avoid large luggage.

July 10-September 30: Kyoto Summer Special Openings

Kyoto's official guide lists limited openings at temples, shrines and historic buildings, with a 2026 focus on the Toyotomi legacy, warlords and modern architecture. Dates and hours vary by venue, so combine one or two locations with indoor stops.

Late July-August: Kobe waterfront evenings

Kobe's official tourism site lists NIGHT PICNIC from July 28 to August 3, alongside summer waterfront illuminations and short fireworks displays on selected Saturdays. Recheck dates before travel because weather can affect programs.

July 13-14: Namba Yasaka Shrine Summer Festival

Namba Yasaka Shrine's summer festival is an easy addition to a Namba itinerary, with the 2026 event listed for July 13-14. From Joy Stay properties around Namba, guests can walk or use Osaka Metro; avoid carrying large luggage during the busiest periods and follow on-site directions.

July 11-September 6: Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts special exhibition

The Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts special exhibition runs from July 11 to September 6 and pairs well with Tennoji Park, Tsutenkaku or Shinsekai for a half-day plan. In summer, visit the indoor exhibition around midday and move to outdoor sights later; check official ticket and opening information before departure.

Reaching Tenjin Matsuri from Joy Stay in south Namba

From Namba, Shin-Imamiya or Ebisucho, take the Osaka Metro Sakaisuji or Tanimachi Line toward Minamimorimachi, or use JR for Osaka Tenmangu Station. For the Okawa river events, Temmabashi or Sakuranomiya may be more convenient. Evening crowds are heavier on July 25, so decide your return station in advance and avoid large luggage.

Planning tips

August and September can remain hot and humid. Carry water and sun protection, use indoor attractions at midday and visit festivals or neighborhoods later. During heat alerts, typhoons or transport disruption, follow organizers and operators. Sources were checked on August 4, 2026; confirm event details again before departure.
