- Recommended time
- About 10-12 hours
- Transport
- JR is convenient for Kyoto Station, Hankyu links Osaka-Umeda with Kyoto-kawaramachi, and Keihan serves Gion-shijo, Fushimi-inari and eastern Kyoto from Yodoyabashi or Kitahama. Choose by your first stop to avoid backtracking.

Suggested itinerary
- 1
Early morning: Osaka to Fushimi Inari
Arrive before temperatures rise. Keihan serves Fushimi-inari Station; JR travelers can change at Kyoto Station to the Nara Line. Walk only as far as your time and fitness allow.
- 2
Morning: Kiyomizu and Higashiyama
Continue to Kiyomizu, then walk through Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka toward Gion. Allow extra time for slopes, steps and crowds, and wear stable shoes.
- 3
Midday: indoor break and a special opening
Use midday for lunch, a museum or a cafe, then choose one venue from Kyoto's Summer Special Openings that is operating that day. Avoid stacking distant temples and long bus queues.
- 4
Evening: Gion, Kamo River and return
Walk through Gion and along the Kamo River, then return by Keihan from Gion-shijo or Hankyu from Kyoto-kawaramachi. Check the final trains and express stopping patterns, and do not rely on the last service.
Before you go
- • Kyoto summers are hot. Carry water and sun protection, schedule air-conditioned breaks and stop if you feel unwell.
- • Popular buses can be crowded. Prefer rail or manageable walks where practical.
- • Keep noise down around temples and homes, respect restricted areas and do not block streets for photos.
FAQ
JR, Hankyu or Keihan from Osaka?
Use JR for Kyoto Station, Hankyu for Kawaramachi and central Kyoto, and Keihan for Gion, Fushimi Inari and eastern Kyoto.
Can I do Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari and Kiyomizu in one day?
It is possible but rushed. For a first day trip, choose Arashiyama, or combine Fushimi Inari with Higashiyama, rather than all three.
Do I need a Kyoto bus day pass?
Not necessarily. Count your actual rides first; this route relies mainly on rail and walking, so adding bus trips just for a pass may not help.
